Geopolitics and sustainability
A complicated world requires that we combine different dimensions in our decision-making so that we may discover patterns, link events, and find solutions to manage risks. In order to anticipate and manage risk on foreign markets, such as the issues of Uighurs in China, the relation between Western Sahara and Morocco, minorities in Myanmar or the native population in Canada, a developed understanding of how geopolitical events and sustainability aspects are connected is needed. By linking geopolitics and sustainability a better basis is generated for companies' decision-making. This is the starting point for the collaboration between the recognized geopolitical agency Consilio and the performance-driven sustainability agency Beyond Intent.
Sustainability is about understanding societal development from a long-term business perspective. How it affects the company and how the company affects societal development. The geopolitical perspective elevates the analysis to a strategic, global level. This raises questions about the balance of power and geopolitical and geo-economic triggers that affect industry, institutions and multinational corporations. Geopolitical events affect companies' international flows, customers, suppliers and conditions for trade. This raises sustainability issues such as risks to human rights, environmental considerations, value issues or prioritisation of relationships, and at the same time opportunities for more sustainable, mutually value-creating and profitable industry. It is at this intersection we operate.
The world in the 2020s will become increasingly unstable, centers of power will shift and become more numerous. When deciding on flows, markets and partners, a multidimensional, long-term and regionally adapted analysis is therefore an important advantage. By combining a geopolitical and a sustainability grid in our analysis, we can go further than we would do individually. This way we can detect risks and predict events of relevance to a specific company. We can also jointly develop solutions to arising strategic problems.
We often supplement our qualitative analysis with quantitative data from a wide range of international sources. The decision-maker thus has access to a broad, well-founded and comparative basis for decisions.
