Towards sustainable speciality coffee

With over 4,500 members, the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe (SCAE) is in a key position to stear the sector towards a more sustainable path. With support from Beyond Intent, SCAE is aligning its sustainability initiatives into a sustainability programme targeting member engagement, knowledge sharing and development projects to address the most significant sustainability challenges for coffee.

Coffee is the world's second most valuable traded commodity after petroleum. As one of the the major commodities of the world, the sustainability challenges related to coffee have massive impact at both ends of the value chain. Close to 25 million people are making their living from coffee related production. Around another 125 million people worldwide depend on coffee for their livelihoods. Production, transportation and consumption comes with substantial environmental impact.
